Anti-wrinkle injections involve injecting small quantities of Botulinum Toxin (also known as BOTOX™) into specific muscles using a tiny needle; this smooths lines and wrinkles by stopping the muscle from moving. As the muscle no longer contracts to cause crease lines, it creates a natural softening to dynamic lines and wrinkles and gives you a natural, fresh, and rejuvenated appearance.
While the botulinum toxin is working, these lines cannot get any deeper as you are not repeatedly creasing the skin, which is why people often have this treatment to prevent the formation of wrinkles.
Anti-wrinkle injections do not remove deep, fixed lines, they may reduce them slightly, and they will stop them from getting worse.
Anti-wrinkle injections are the treatment of choice to smooth lines on the upper face but do not work to smooth lines on the lower face. Botulinum toxin can be administered in the lower face, but these are typically to reduce the appearance of: gummy smiles; downturned corners of the mouth; chin dimpling etc. It can also be placed within chewing muscles to help people who clench and grind their teeth.
Botulinum toxin is regarded as being safe and has been used to treat tens of millions of patients worldwide for both medical and cosmetic reasons over the past two decades. It is recognised as a medicine and is used widely in the NHS to treat medical issues such as irritable bladder, muscle contracture and spasms in much higher doses than we use it for cosmetically and as it is not a new treatment, there is long-term data on its safety profile.
When administered correctly, botulinum toxin will typically last for 3-6 months (however individual factors apply and some clients get a longer or shorter duration than this), botulinum toxin is not painful as ultrafine needles are used. However, it can be mildly uncomfortable.
It is a quick, easy, and very effective treatment with little or no recovery time. You can expect to see an improvement 3-5 days after your treatment, with the full result taking 2 weeks.
There have been no known long-term harmful effects. Temporary swelling and bruising are to be expected. A mild weakness or paralysis of the upper eyelid (ptosis) or brow may occur in patients and will disappear over a period of 2-10 weeks. Eye drop may help speed up recovery. A more common side effect is paralysis of the muscles in the outer edge of the eyebrow. This elevates so changes shape. A small amount of Botox can be injected above the raised area of the eyebrow will bring the eyebrow back down.
